It is no wonder that our society is beset with obesity, heart and circulation disease, and cancer. After a period of time, the body gets so clogged up and nutritionally starved that it begins to break down. People wonder why, but they were never properly trained and did not learn any better. It is an interesting fact that people who live to an older age, say into their 80’s and 90’s eat a lot of vegetables.

Another secret of good health and fitness is exercise. Today most of our children average 7 hours per day in front of a video screen of some kind. The emphasis on children has come full circle from playing baseball, playing outdoors, running, playing on the playground to spending nearly all of their free time being physically inactive.

The human body was designed to be exercised. The muscles are ready for action to run, jog, walk and move. The heart and the circulatory system operates more efficiently and gets rid of waste that otherwise accumulates and causes problems. If a person fails to exercise, the muscles will lose tone and not be able to operate as effectively. The heart will be reduced in function over time, and the blood vessels will clog and not be able to operate as well.

The average middle aged person can effectively receive enough exercise by simply walking for a half an hour per day. If an individual has a job where walking is required, such as a postal carrier, that person’s exercise is largely accounted for. Exercise that is more intense, such as jogging, will certainly provide more benefit if done in moderation. If jogging is practiced in a more intensive manner, it can cause damage to the knee and ankle cartilage.

When broken down to its basics, fitness is just practicing proper diet and exercise habits. Making sensible decisions about what we eat and how we exercise will pay great dividends. A little study and gaining of practical knowledge in these areas will pay off in the reward of a long and enjoyable life on this earth.

The goal of six pack abs mainly depends upon losing weight by completing exercises that focus on the muscles in the abdominal area. There are literally dozens of such exercises including many that are meant for other major muscle groups, but that can be modified to include a workout for your abdominal muscles. Here are just a few of the major abdominal emphasis exercises.


Crunches are done by lying on the floor either on a mat or not, with your arms crossed in front of your chest. Many people do crunches with the hands behind the head, but this can create lower back problems because of the pull on the head and neck. A slightly different position has the finger tips placed behind the ears, rather than crossed on the chest. It is important not to pull on the neck or on the ears for assistance in rising from the floor. Instead, suck the abdomen back toward the spine and inhale through the nose at the same time. Raise the shoulders toward the knees using only the muscles in the abdomen. The entire back should not be lifted from the floor, as this is likely to create back strain. No additional benefit to the abdomen is gained by raising the entire torso. The key part of the crunch is the initial flexing of the abdominal muscles as the shoulders are lifted off the floor. As the shoulders clear the floor, exhale through your mouth. Complete the exhalation with a gasp to expel the last of the air from the lungs as your shoulders stay clear of the floor. Lower the shoulders back to the point where the shoulder blade touches the ground while inhaling. It is important to maintain the proper breathing control and muscle flexing to get maximum benefit from crunches.


Once again start in a position on the floor with your feet flat and your knees bent. The fingers should be placed behind the ears, or you can cross your arms on your chest. Slowly raise the entire back off the floor while inhaling deeply and exhale as you reverse the move. This exercise can be made more challenging in several ways. For instance, you can do sit-ups from an incline with your head lower than your lower body. You can then add weights on the chest to lift while you are sitting up. Weights can become heavier on an incline bench. The next difficult step can be attained by holding the feet off the ground while doing sit ups or making a bicycle peddling motion while doing sit ups with your legs. These exercises may not be easy but are very beneficial to the abdominal area.


Leg lifts begin with the legs straight and the hands at your sides while lying on the floor. Lift both legs up at the same time without bending the knees until the legs are at a ninety-degree angle or a close as possible. Not everyone is flexible enough to reach the ninety-degree angle. Lower the legs as close as possible to the floor without actually touching and repeat several times. Increase the challenge of this exercise by adding weights to the legs while lifting them. Another challenging exercise for improving definition and musculature in the abdomen is to hang from a pull-up bar while lifting both legs to a ninety-degree position. As with most other exercises, try to stay conscious of breathing while slowly doing the routines.


This exercise begins by lying flat on the floor with the hands at your sides in order to provide better balance. At the same time you raise your knees, bring your torso up slowly till the face and knees meet. Return slowly to the original position while in full control of the movement. The jackknife name comes from the natural tendency of the legs to bend at the knee with the feet dropping to the hips presenting the shape of a jackknife. The difficulty level of this position can be increased by holding a weight between the feet while performing the sit-ups.


This exercise begins with you on your back on the floor with the arms extended over your head. Bring both legs and torso up at the same time without bending the knees or the arms. Keep the pace slow and steady and reach for your feet with your extended hands at the top of the arc. If possible, try to touch your feet, but this move can be tricky until your level of flexibility increases. As with other exercises, adding weight between the feet increases the difficulty level.

However, ephedra causes high blood pressure, stroke, and serious heart problems, which is why the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedra was prohibited in April 2004.

7-Keto Dehydroepiandrosterone (7-keto DHEA): Preliminary research indicates that this product may decrease body weight and fat composition by increasing metabolism, but larger research studies are needed.

Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) and Garcinia Cambogia: These products claim to suppress appetite and improve fat metabolism. While studies have shown mixed results, they are generally safe.

L-Carnitine: L-Carnitine claims to inhibit obesity, but there is very little evidence of its effectiveness.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), Pyruvate, and Dihydroxyacetone and Pyruvate (DHAP): A few small studies suggest that these supplements may have modest effects on weight loss, but research is needed. Presently, no serious side effects have been reported.

Lecithin, Guar Gum, Psyllium Hulls, Chickweed, and Chitosan (Examples: Chito-Trim, Exercise in a Bottle, Fat Blocker-Chitosan Complex, Fat Grabbers, Fat Trapper, Fat Trapper Plus, Metabo Fat Blocker, Miracletab, Now Chitosan with Chromium): These products claim to help break down fat so that it can be absorbed, emulsified, trapped, and eliminated by the body. There is currently no competent and reliable scientific research to support such claims.

OK, So I have to admit that working out for an hour a day is hard. I get it. Who has the time to commit to doing it 3 – 5 times a week? Let alone every day as some would suggest! But if I showed a sick HIIT workout that you could do every day in only 10 minutes…would you be willing to commit to that? Hopefully, most of you out there will say yes!

But I started doing shorter workouts with the 20 Minute Insanity Workout and have never looked back. So when I caught this YouTube video by Mike Donavik when I was doing some more research on HIIT workouts it was an eye opener. Nice variety of exercises and he provides entertainment while he busts his butt with you. This is a Metabolism booster that I recommended to my daughter who is getting married and wants to get in better shape.

E.g., a fruitarian can eat an avocado sandwich, a coconut milkshake or the purest coconut ice cream made from the milk and meat of the fruit, veggie burgers made of lentil or bean paste or tofu, a succotash of corn, limas, peas, and tomatoes, sweets made with pure maple syrup or date sugar, pecan pies made with fruit sugars, fruit shakes made of a mixture of orange and banana, pear and peach, pomegranate, papaya, and plum. In other words, fruitarian may eat fruits 99.9% of the time, but occasionally do indulge in the delicacies of other food groups.

1. Have a realistic goal.

Abraham Lincoln once said that, “A goal properly set is halfway reached.” This applies to a lot of what we do in life, and this includes losing weight.

In setting your weight loss goals, don’t just set a number. Thinking and aiming for a certain ‘ideal weight’ would, most often than not, be insufficient to keep you going. If you want to lose, say 30 lbs., attach a more life-changing purpose to it, like shedding it off so you can do better at your favorite sport. The weight loss goal can also be about boosting your confidence, or simply fitting into your old pair of jeans.

Make sure to also make them realistic. If you want to shed 50 lbs., then don’t give yourself a month to do it. Be aware of what your body can handle, and what your lifestyle (including work and home activities) require.

This way, you can easily keep up with your goals, and not lose your way when you start to get that dragging feeling when you’re mid-way with your weight loss plan.


2.       Put some variety in your fitness activities.

Going to the gym can be an interesting and exciting cycle at first, especially when you start to feel lighter and thinner. However, if you do the same workouts regularly, things can get boring. And when it does, many tend to tire out of the weight loss process.

In order to avoid this, make sure that you change up your work outs every so often, depending on your schedule and interests. You can perhaps do weights and work with gym equipment for the first two weeks, and then start joining fitness classes like indoor cycling/spinning, belly-dancing, aerobics, and many more.

Aside from going to the gym, there are also other ways to lose weight. Yoga, dancing, and even hula-hooping are just some of those options.


3.       Call a friend.

Shared experiences can also make your weight loss journey memorable. When you start feeling like you can no longer keep up with the weight loss plan, get a friend to join you in this ‘journey’. You can track your progress together, and you’ll have someone to enjoy spinning classes with too.

Having a friend to do things with also ensures you have someone by your side to keep you going. Some friendly competition also helps you in aiming to achieve more.
